Background
Kyokaku (townsman of chivalry). Son of a discharged retainer of the Numata Clan in Kozuke Province (Gumma Prefecfecture), he was adopted as son by Onoemon Araishi, a professional wrestler in Osaka. Fond of brawls, he became well known in osaka. Fought Chokichi Hanaregoma, a wrestler, and later killed Soemon Hattori and was executed. The name of Nuregami (wet paper) derives from a piece of wet paper he used to put on his forehead as a precaution against sword cuts whenever he fought. His wife was Yakko-no-Koman, a female kyokaku. Kabuki plays and stories were written about his life.
