Chris Felver was born in October, 1946, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States.
Felver attended the University of Miami, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969. He graduated from London College of Printing (now London College of Communication) in 1975, as well as from Sherwood Oaks Experimental College two years later.
Felver became a producer and director of the performance pieces Ferlinghetti Paints and Lets Go, broadcasted by KQED-TV in 1983, and of California Clay in the Rockies, broadcasted by PBS-TV (Public Broadcasting Service) the same year. Next year he directed West Coast: "Beat and Beyond”, which was telecasted by PBS-TV. Felver was a producer of Taken by the Romans, shown at Museu Italo Americano in San Francisco in 1994, as well as of Tony Cragg: In Celebration of Sculpture, shown at International Art Film Biennale in Paris the same year. He produced the films Donald Judd’s Marfa Texas the next year, The Coney Island of Lawrence Ferlinghetti, shown at Venice International Film Festival in 1996, and Cecil Taylor: All the Notes, broadcasted in 2005.
Felver participated in the 53rd Venice International Film Festival and screened films in festivals and museums around the world, including presentations at the Library of Congress (2006), the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles (2006), Lincoln Center in New York (2005), the Mill Valley Film Festival (1996, 2002), Santa Fe Film Festival (2001, 2005), Northwest West Film Festival, Portland Art Museum (2001), Walker Museum of Art in Minneapolis (2000), Hirshhorn Museum in Washington (2000). Felver's documentary film on Lawrence Ferlinghetti titled Ferlinghetti: A Rebirth of Wonder was released in 2013.
Felver became a composer for John Cage: One Seven, performed at San Francisco Art Institute in 1991. Additionally, he is a photographer with numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at George Krevsky Fine Arts, Art Institute for the Permian Basin, Gotham Books, New York City, City Lights Bookstore, San Francisco and in the Netherlands, France, Germany and Italy. He is a contributor to group exhibitions and to work represented in collections at Galerie Michael Werner, Galerie Springer, Lisson Gallery, Knoedler Gallery, Pacific Film Archive, San Francisco Public Library, New York Public Library and other institutions. Felver was a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome from 1987 to 1989.
Concerning his writings, Felver co-authored his first book Seven Days in Nicaragua Libre with Lawrence Ferlinghetti, it was published in 1984 and was based on a week together in Nicaragua with Minister of Culture Ernesto Cardenal. His second book - a monograph of contemporary American poets - titled The Poet Exposed was issued two years later. Next came Ferlinghetti Portrait (1998) and Angels, Anarchists & Gods (1996), featuring the American avant-garde. In 2001 Felver wrote a book The Importance of Being, the work contains 400 portraits of eminent figures in American arts, letters, music and politics. One more year later he published a book The Late Great Allen Ginsberg. In 2007 Felver's book titled Beat - a memoir of image, text and reminiscence - was issued.
