In the author's words (p.iv):"Writing this manuscript began in 1989 as I jotted down every detail I could recall to use in suing the Whirlpool Corporation for breach of its oral contract with me. This breach led to the dissolution of my thirty-eight-year marriage to one of its vice presidents. In 1992, having lost both my husband and the lawsuit, I shaped the jottings into a narrative aimed at explaining to my four children what had happened to their family. Next came my realization that I am not alone in this experience, that corporations breaking up families has become an American sociological phenomenon. With the help of an editor whose own marriage and family were similarly disrupted, I developed the manuscript to its current state for publication and distribution."
