(Taking the reader through the tangled web of opera's opul...)
Taking the reader through the tangled web of opera's opulent history, this book traces its roots back to Ancient Greek music dramas, through the medieval Christian and secular musical plays, to the Renaissance and to the prolific 17th century. It continues with detailed accounts of the 18th century - when opera became a household word - the High Baroque, the French and German heroic and romantic comedies, the great Italian period and the contemporary works of, amongst others, Glass and Birtwistle. This anecdotal study frequently touches on other aspects of opera, including its settings and economics and the social, political and even religious or philosophical elements.

(The English tenor, Peter Pears, made a unique contributio...)
The English tenor, Peter Pears, made a unique contribution to British musical life, not only through his own singing but as the inspiration and muse of his life-long companion Benjamin Britten, who created for Pears some of the greatest tenor roles in 20th-century opera. This book describes Pears's life, his childhood and school days at Lancing College, his abortive academic career at Oxford and his early professional work as a member of the BBC singers. The first half of this book culminates in Pears's meeting with Britten in the 1930s, and their relationship consolidated during their wartime years in America, and by the fruitfulness of their artistic collaboration which resulted in several extraordinary song cycles and a number of inspirational roles on the stage.

Christopher Headington was born on April 28, 1930, in London, England; the son of Kenneth Headington.
Christopher Headington attended Taunton School in Somerset in South West England. He was educated in music at the Royal Academy of Music in London and privately by master pianist Lennox Berkeley. He also had piano lessons with Yvonne Lefebure.
Debuting as a pianist in 1950, Christopher Headington played his own Variations for Piano and Orchestra. That was the beginning of a concert career that took him to several continents, including much of Europe and the British Commonwealth. He served as a music teacher at several British colleges, including the University of Oxford.
In 1965, at the age of thirty-five, Headington began his supplementary career as an author of books, which was to play an increasing role in the decades to come. His 1965 volume The Orchestra and its Instruments presented young readers with the various instrumental families, like strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. In 1974, Headington’s Bodley Head History of Western Music was published to considerable success.
Another reference work came from Headington’s pen six years later, the Illustrated Dictionary of Musical Terms. This was followed one year afterward by The Performing World of the Musician, which focused on the composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, and by a small book on the recently deceased British composer Benjamin Britten, simply titled Britten. In 1982, Headington issued a book titled Chamber Music, and in 1987, a major work, Opera: A History, co-authored with Roy Westbrook and Terry Barfoot.
Headington’s later years saw him writing biographies of composers and, in one notable case, of a singer, the tenor Sir Peter Pears, who was the longtime partner of composer Britten. This authorized biography, released in 1992, inevitably contained a good deal of material about Britten as well as Pears. Headington’s book-writing career was rounded out by two entries in the Simon & Schuster Compact Companions series, on Bach in 1994 and Chopin in 1995.
He was also an Examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) during the 1980s and in March 1985 assessed students on the island of Barbados under the administration of John George Fletcher (the ABRSM representative from 1969 to 2000). He played and taught all over the world including Russia, China, and Zimbabwe. He was a regular reviewer in Gramophone magazine as well.
