The poems in this collection are presented as translations from the work of the eponymous Katerina Brac, who lives in a country, and writes in a language, that are never identified. 'Reid's achievement in this book is to conjure up in very few words a life-system capable of supporting real poetry. He has never written more carefully and delicately.' Peter Porter, Observer 'Sensitive, intelligent and highly inventive.' Stephen Spender

This is a collection of poetry, beginning with shorter poems and continuing with two longer poems, both concerned with the coaxing of eloquence from difficult circumstances. The first recounts the quirky memories of an old man in his 100th year. The second celebrates his recovery from a dangerous illness.

(Christopher Reid's minute observations from the periphery...)
Christopher Reid's minute observations from the periphery more often than not point to some sort of universal truth. In this collection the subjects of his curiosity include marriage, fantasy, ways of perceiving events and the sinister nature of children.

Since 1976, Christopher Reid has been startling and delighting readers of poetry. His philosphic concerns are often expressed in small, domestic details, but, as with the Metaphysical poets he admires, the effect heightens his poetry's seriousness and impact. Reid finds significance in the marginal, the endangered, the apocryphal, and the absurd. His verse, which has earned him both the distinguished Hawthornden and Somerset Maugham Prizes, is subversive and highly intelligent. The Pultizer Prize-winning poet Charles Simic provides a welcome introduction to one of England's most distinguished and original voices.
