Chuck Norris is an American actor and martial artist. He has starred in such action films as "Return of the Dragon" and "Missing in Action." He also starred on the hit TV series "Walker, Texas Ranger."
Background
Ethnicity:
Chuck's paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother were of Irish ancestry, while his maternal grandfather and paternal grandmother were Cherokee Native Americans.
Carlos Ray "Chuck" Norris was born on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, United States to Wilma and Ray Norris. Norris' father, a mechanic, bus driver, and truck driver had a problem with drinking. In addition, Norris was bothered and teased about his mixed ethnicity growing up. Having been bullied fueled his desire to learn martial arts.
Education
Chuck attended Hamilton Junior High School in Houston, Texas, in the early 1950s before he moved to California and graduated from North Torrance High School in 1958. Norris shared in an interview that in high school, he was shy, physically weak, and only a C-grade student. He used to daydream about being strong enough to stand up to his bullies.
After graduating, Chuck Norris joined the United States Air Force, where he became a member of the military police in the hopes of pursuing a career in law enforcement. It was in the service, while being stationed at Osan Air Base in South Korea, that Norris first discovered the martial arts. When he once found himself unable to control a rowdy drunk in a bar while on patrol duty, Norris realized he needed combat skills. He studied Tang Soo Do and Tae Kwon Do before returning to California. When he was discharged from the Air Force in 1962, Norris began teaching the skills he had acquired to students.
Norris became a world champion in karate contests, which lent credence to his abilities as a martial arts instructor. He taught several celebrities the finer points of self-defense, including the Osmonds, Priscilla Presley, and Steve McQueen. Norris even trained Price Is Right host Bob Barker. But not all his schools were doing well, and after retiring from competition in 1974, Norris was looking for other opportunities. McQueen suggested that Norris try his hand at acting. It took several years and nine films, but Norris had a breakthrough with 1982’s Lone Wolf McQuade.
While Norris didn’t become a household name until the 1980s, his turn as a villain in 1972’s Return of the Dragon (also known as Way of the Dragon) opposite Bruce Lee wound up being a seminal meeting of two onscreen martial arts legends. When Lee was looking for an adversary for the climactic fight, he called Norris, whom he knew and was friends with. But the film’s producer insisted that Norris gain 20 pounds so that he would appear to be much larger than Lee on camera. "That’s why I don’t do jump kicks [in the movie]," Norris told Empire in 2007. "I couldn’t get off the ground!"
At the behest of McQueen, he began attending acting classes at "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer." He had his first starring role in the 1977 action film "Breaker! Breaker!" in which he played a trucker whose friend gets killed by a policeman.
He proved to be a bankable actor during the 1980s. He appeared in a series of action films, including "The Octagon" (1980), "Lone Wolf McQuade" (1983), "Code of Silence" (1985), and "Hero and the Terror" (1988).
In 1990, he created the martial art style, Chun Kuk Do which is based on the Tang Soo Do art form. The Korean term Chun Kuk Do is loosely translated as "The Universal Way." "The United Fighting Arts Federation" (UFAF) holds the Chun Kuk Do world championship tournament in Nevada. In 1990, he became the first-ever Westerner in the history of Tae Kwon Do to be given the rank of 8th Degree Black Belt Grand Master.
He starred in the popular action crime drama television series "Walker, Texas Ranger" which ran for eight seasons from 1993 to 2001. The series was broadcast in over 100 countries and was famous for its moral values. A television movie titled "Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire" was made in 2005. The movie was based on the popular television series of the same name. Norris reprised his role as Cordell Walker in the movie.
In early 2005, the martial artist shot to fame when American humorist Ian Spector created the "Chuck Norris facts," a collection of absurd, hyperbolic, and fictional claims. Chuck went on a tour of the same name and visited the troops in Iraq in an attempt to boost the morale of the troops.
Possessing a more contemplative side, Norris has written several books. In 2006, he published his first book ‘The Justice Riders.’ The following year, he released its sequel ‘A Threat to Justice.’ In 2008, he published his non-fiction political book ‘Black Belt Patriotism: How to Reawaken America’ which peaked at number 14 in New York’s Best Sellers list.
From 2010 to 2012, he appeared in a number of advertisements for "T-World," "World of Warcraft," and "BZ WBK Bank." In 2012, he was cast as "Booker" in the action film "Expendables 2" alongside an ensemble cast, including Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jason Statham.
He also became the face of the video game "Chuck Norris: Bring On the Pain." He produced "Non-Stop Chuck Norris," an isometric action-RPG game for mobiles.
Since 2015, Chuck has been appearing in a number of commercials for brands, such as "Hoegaarden beer," "United Healthcare," "Hesburger," "Cerveza Poker," "Toyota," and others. He was also the brand ambassador of "Fiat" automobiles.

Religion
Chuck Norris converted to Christianity late in his career. Although it is not clear when it is clear that it's the truth. He is the author of many Christian books, he campaigns against drug use, and he promotes prayer in public schools. He also serves on the board of directors of the National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools and believes strongly that religion and politics can, and should, mix.
Politics
Politically conservative, Norris has campaigned on behalf of Republican candidates. He backed Bush in the 1988 presidential election and supported Mike Huckabee in the 2008 race for the Republican nomination. A believer in the Constitution's Second Amendment, Norris has worked with the National Rifle Association to oppose some legislation on restricting gun ownership.
Views
Taking the knowledge Norris had acquired over many years of training in Tang Soo Do and Tae Kwon Do, he developed his own unique martial arts system and philosophy that he eventually dubbed Chun Kuk Do. In addition to combat techniques, the system encourages students to develop themselves to their maximum potential and look for the good in other people. The art takes most of its inspiration from Tang Soo Do, which is an ancient Korean fighting style that took inspiration for a lot of other traditional techniques found in Kung Fu, Subak, and Taekkyon. But while that served as the main foundation of Chun Kuk Do, it has evolved into much more than that. When watching a practitioner practice martial art, you’ll see a lot of moves found in Japanese Karate, Judo, Hapkido, Taekwondo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu,
Just like a lot of other martial arts, the highest rank one can get in Chun Kuk Do is a black belt that takes years upon years of dedication, training, and passion to achieve. One can slowly rise in the ranks and get promoted based on your skill and mastery of certain techniques.
When Chuck Norris developed this martial art style, he included a code of ethics that students must adhere to when training in Chun Kuk Do. It is a follows:
1. I will develop myself to the maximum of my potential in all ways.
2. I will forget the mistakes of the past and press on to greater achievements.
3. I will always be in a positive frame of mind and convey this feeling to every person that I meet.
4. I will continually work at developing love, happiness, and loyalty in my family and acknowledge that no other success can compensate for failure in the home.
5. I will look for the good in all people and make them feel worthwhile.
6. I will say nothing if I have nothing good to say about a person.
7. I will give so much time to the improvement of myself that I will have no time to criticize others.
8. I will always be as enthusiastic about the success of others as I am about my own.
9. I will maintain an attitude of open-mindedness toward another person’s viewpoint, while still holding fast to that which I know to be true and honest.
10. I will maintain respect for those in authority and demonstrate this respect at all times.
11. I will always remain loyal to God, my country, my family, and my friends.
12. I will remain highly goal-oriented throughout my life because that positive attitude helps my family, my country, and myself.
Chun Kuk Do was renamed the Chuck Norris System in 2015.
Quotations:
"I don't step on toes, I step on necks."
"You wanna try knocking me off?"
"Kids need heroes. Call it square if you want, but I'm a flag-waver, so I push a lot of Americanism in my movies."
"Violence is my last option."
"Men are like steel. When they lose their temper, they lose their worth."
"A lot of times people look at the negative side of what they feel they can't do. I always look on the positive side of what I can do."
"People need to realize what real happiness and success is because success as an actor is fleeting. You can be up there one day and gone the next."
Membership
Norris has been a longtime supporter of numerous charities, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the United Way. In 1992, Norris started his own charitable organization called Kickstart with help from President George H.W. Bush. Kickstart provides martial arts training to middle-school students to learn respect and discipline and to improve their self-esteem.

Personality
Norris loves speed and has competed in off-shore powerboat competitions. In 1997, he reached an important martial arts milestone, becoming the first man in the Western Hemisphere to earn an 8th degree Black Belt Grand Master title.
Thanks to his fame in the martial arts world, Norris was sought after to endorse athletic products. In 1982, martial arts equipment company Century recruited Norris to be a spokesperson for their Karate Jeans, which featured flexible fabric sewn into the crotch that would presumably allow the wearer to deliver a bone-crunching kick while looking fashionable. Eventually renamed Action Jeans, Norris promoted them for years.
At the height of his popularity in the 1980s, Norris teamed with animation company Ruby-Spears for an animated series, Chuck Norris: Karate Kommandos. The show featured Norris and a team of martial artists fighting villains like Superninja and The Claw. Although 65 shows were planned, just a few aired. "We only did six of them, and then a woman at CBS said, 'Those are too violent,'" Norris told MTV News in 2009.
For eight seasons, Norris pummeled bad guys as the star of the 1990s CBS television series Walker, Texas Ranger, which became the first primetime show shot on location in Texas at Norris’s insistence. In 2010, Norris was named an honorary member of the Texas Rangers by state governor Rick Perry in acknowledgment of Norris’s work in raising awareness for the elite unit and for his work helping underprivileged youths via martial arts programs. Norris’s brother, Aaron Norris, who was an executive producer on the show, also received the designation.
