Merline A. Lovelace is an American author, who writes about love, seduction and passion. She published more than seventy books. Moreover, Merline spent twenty-three years in the United States Air Force and reached the rank of colonel, serving around the world, including Vietnam.
Background
Merline A. Lovelace was born on September 9, 1946, in Northampton, Massachusetts, United States, into a military family. She is a daughter of Merlin Thoma, a military man, and Alyce (Griggs) Thoma, a homemaker. Lovelace's father served in the European theatre of World War II and had remained in uniform afterward for more than twenty years. Her father's career took the family to numerous states and many foreign countries during Merline's childhood.
Education
In 1968, Merline received a Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude from Ripon College in Wisconsin. She continued her education at Troy State University (present-day Troy University) and obtained her Master of Science degree cum laude in 1975. In 1991, Lovelace graduated from John F. Kennedy School of Government.
During her lifetime, Merline also attended Middlebury College, Princeton University and Air War College.
Moreover, during her student years, Lovelace studied several languages, including German, Russian and Mandarin Chinese. These skills helped her greatly during her career in the Air Force.
In 1968, Merline entered the United States Air Force. Her assignments ranged in location from the Pentagon, to Vietnam, China and Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, which she commanded for a time. In 1991, she retired with the rank of colonel. The same year, in 1991, after her retirement, Lovelace tried her hand at writing romances and her first novel, "Bits and Pieces", saw print in 1993. This novel was a success for her and Merline went on to write several more romance novels, including "Somewhere in Time", "Perfect Double" and "Lady of the Upper Kingdom".
"Somewhere in Time" was Lovelace’s first time-travel romance. Its protagonist, Aurora Durant, a female pilot of the United States Airforce, crashes her plane in a Middle-Eastern desert. Somehow, Aurora defied the laws of time, however, for she was captured by Lucius Antonius, an important centurion of the Roman Army in 180 A.D. Despite many differences in their mutual cultures, the couple is deeply attracted to each other.
Later, Lovelace used Maggie Sinclair as the central character for the novels of her "Code Name: Danger" series, which includes titles, such as "Night of the Jaguar", "The Cowboy and the Cossack" and "Perfect Double".
Egypt under Alexander the Great is the setting for Lovelace’s 1996 historical romance "Lady of the Upper Kingdom". The book’s hero is Philip Tauron, a friend of Alexander, who is first attracted to, and then marries the Egyptian Lady Farah, a priestess, who is assigned to protect a sacred desert cat. Though the couple finds love early, marriage is not a guarantee of their happiness, and they have much to overcome before they can find their happy ending.
In her later years, Merline penned other works, such as the novel "Mind Games" (2008), anthology series "Holiday with a Vampire" (2008), short fiction "A Christmas Kiss" (2016) and many others.
Currently, Merline Lovelace lives in Oklahoma City with her husband Cary A. Lovelace, who is also a retired Air Force colonel.
Merline believes, that romance novels celebrate the fundamental relationship between a man and a woman, yet still combine elements of suspense, drama and historical detail. The author loves strong, aggressive heroes and heroines, who reach out and grab hold of their fate. She believes, that warriors make great heroes and it doesn’t matter whether they’re wearing the short skirts of a Roman toga or an Air Force flight suit. As for her heroines, she likes them strong and adventurous.
Membership
Merline is a member of Romance Writers of America. Moreover, she served as a president of Oklahoma Chapter of the organization.
Also, Lovelace is a member of other organizations, including Military Writers Society of America, RomVets — Military Women Writers, Air Force Women Officers Association and Vietnam Women Veterans organization.
