Chuichi Kamei was born in Edo (old name for Tokyo) and brought up in Shizuoka.
KameiI Chfiichi came to Tokyo and opened a small second hand book shop at Kanda (1881). Later turned publisher and brought out an English-Japanese dictionary. With Shigenobu Okuma attempted, but failed to bring out Nihon Dai Hyakkajiten (Encyclopedia of Japan). He established the Association for Completion of Nihon Daihyakka Jiten (1912). KameiI Chfiichi established the influential publishing firm, Sanseido (1915), of which his eldest son Torao Kamei was director.
His former family name was Nakagawa, which he changed after he married in to the Kamei family.
