She obtained her Master of Arts with honors from Columba College, Otago University in 1970.
Cilia McQueen has been a teacher and artist. She had her own individual shows at Bosshard Galleries, Dunedin in 1982 and at Red Metro Gallery, Dunedin in 1983.
McQueen received a number of various awards, including New Zealand Book award (1983, 1989), P.E.N./Jessie Mackay award in 1983, Air New Zealand/P.E.N. travel award in 1984. She also got Robert Bums fellowship (1985, 1986), Fulbright Visiting Writer’s fellowship (1985), Inaugural Australian-New Zealand Writers’ exchange fellowship (1987), and Goethe Institute scholarship (1988). Besides, she is the recipient of the New Zealand Book award (1991) for "Berlin Diary".
She married Ralph Hotere in 1974 and has a daughter.
