Michael Sampson was born on October 13, 1952, in Denison, Texas, United States. He is a son of Roy Sampson, a carpenter, and Ida Sampson (maiden name Bon), a housewife.
Michael Sampson did his studies in the Denison public schools until grade three when his family relocated to Tom Bean, Texas. Sampson was an avid reader, and by fourth grade, he made a decision to become a writer in the future. The first steps to the goal were his elementary school stories about ‘The Hardy Boys’ and ‘Superman,’ as well as his first publication in a national magazine, a simple joke.
In addition to his passion for books, Sampson was fascinated by football during his junior high school years being first one of the members of the local team, and then the captain Tom Bean Tomcats team. Sampson’s perseverance was even marked by a title the Class B Texas State All-Star Team. As to the summers, Michael Sampson devoted his time to working as a lumberjack in Damariscotta, Maine.
After graduating from school, he pursued his education at Texas A&M University-Commerce where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Politics in 1974. Two years later, he obtained a Master of Education degree. In 1977, Michael Sampson relocated to Arizona where he became a student of the University of Arizona. He completed the Ph.D. in reading under Roach Van Allan, and Ken and Yetta Goodman three years later.
Michael Sampson began his career as an educator in the Commerce Independent School District where he taught from 1974 to 1976. Three years after, Sampson joined the staff of his alma mater, Texas A&M University-Commerce. In 1980, he became an executive director of the International Institute of Literacy Learning.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Sampson wrote several books for teachers, including ‘The Pursuit of Literacy’, ‘Pathways to Literacy’, ‘Experiences with Literacy’, and ‘Pathways to Literacy: Process Transactions’.
In 1996, he came full circle in his writing and published his first book for children focused on his old passion for football, ‘The Football That Won’. The story was based on an experience he had as a seventh-grade football player. Several of Sampson’s forthcoming publications have been also guided by his own experiences. Among the examples are ‘Star of the Circus’ resulted from watching his kindergarten son’s classroom circus show, ‘Si Won’s Victory’ based upon the struggle of a Korean child that his son knew in grade school, and finally, ‘Swish!’ written after watching the drama of a cliffhanger finish to a girls’ basketball game.
By the 2000s, Sampson became a full professor at Texas A&M University-Commerce where he was a department head and director of the doctoral program. The author left academics in 2004 to devote all his time to writing.
Sampson came back to teaching activity three years later when he was invited as a professor of writing and research at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. By 2010, he accepted the post of a Dean of the School of Education at Southern Connecticut State University. In a couple of years, he also headed the College of Education at Northern Arizona University. Beginning in 2014, Michael Sampson has worked at St. John's University in New York City.
The turning point in Sampson’s life and career was a meeting with an educator and author of children’s books Bill Martin Jr. in 1978. Since then, the author became involved in workshops and conferences that Martin organized for teachers across the United States. Over the years, two friends and colleagues produced a great number of books for children, many of which provided them with awards and honors, like ‘I Pledge Allegiance’, ‘Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?’ and ‘Chicka, Chicka, 1, 2, 3’.
One of the latest books by Sampson is ‘Spunky Little Monkey’ written in collaboration with Bill Martin Jr. and published in 2017.
Nowadays, Michael Sampson continues his workshop activity visiting and speaking at schools, book festivals, and teacher conferences across the United States.
