While in college Bull did some freelance work for a local paper. In 1918 he went to Hollywood and worked as an assistant camera operator at Metro Pictures. In 1920 Samuel Goldwyn hired him to do publicity stills, and when Goldwyn merged with Metro in 1924, Bull stayed on as head of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer stills department. He remained there until his retirement in 1960.
Considered one of the finest portrait photographers in the film industry, Bull photographed all the legendary stars who passed through MGM's gates during the studio's heyday.
