Pioneer monetarist whose contribution to the modern restatement of the quantity theory of money was long unrecognised. His published papers in the 1940s were unusual in their opposition to the current Keynesian tide. His writings have a strong empirical bias, originally related to his research for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
