Clayton received his B.A. at University of Northern Iowa in 1977, and then Master of Arts at University Nebraska, Omaha, in 1982. Then he got Doctor of Philosophy in history at American University in 1990.
In 1977-1984 Clayton worked as a Public high school teacher in Council Bluffs. Then he was a teaching fellow at American University, Washington, in 1984-1986, and also adjunct professor of European history since 1986. He served a s an assistant professor of military history at University Maryland Baltimore County since 1991.
Clayton is also a contributor of more than twenty articles to journals, including Civil War Times Illustrated, Philippine Studies, Montana: Magazine of Western History, West Virginia History, War and Society, and Gate Heritage.
Member American History Association Society for Military History, Society for History American Foreign Relations, American Civil Liberties Union, Phi Sigma Epsilon, Phi Alpha Theta.
On May 23, 1981, Clayton married Sandra Kay Hocking, and they have two children: Ian Alexander and Tyler James.
