The youth studied architecture at the Massachusetts institute of Technology.
He served, as a draftsman in the Boston office of Peabody & Stearns. During the 1890's he was sent by the firm to open a branch office in Pittsburgh, and when his services were no longer required in that capacity, MacClure decided to begin his career in that city, subsequently organized the firm of MacClure & Spahr.
Although his period of practice was comparatively brief, he was active in planning several important buildings in Pittsburgh including the Keystone Bank Building, 1908; Diamond National Bank Building; Albert Curry Office Building; University Club; Union National Bank Building, the Ear and Eye Hospital, and in addition many residences.
