Colin Rhodes was born on December 17, 1963 in Mexborough, England, in the family of Colin and Beryl Rhodes.
Colin received Bachelor in Art and Art History with honors at London University in 1986. Then he earned Master of Arts in Art History at University Essex, England, in 1987, and Doctor of Philosophy in Art History there in 1993.
Colin's work on self-taught and outsider art is world-renowned, including his books,Outsider Art: Spontaneous Alternatives and Raw Erotica, and numerous essays and articles in books, journals and exhibition catalogs. He is Director of the Self-Taught and Outsider Art Research Collection, founded at the University of Sydney in 2008, and Editor of Elsewhere, the International Journal of Self-Taught and Outsider Art. He has curated numerous exhibitions, including the critically acclaimed Roger Ballens Theatre of the Mindin Sydney in 2016. He has a keen commitment to art making and exhibits his own work occasionally.
Rhodes was Dean of SCA from 2006-2016 and inaugural Chair of the Division of Architecture and Creative Arts. He was architect and driver of the University of Sydney Disability Action Plan 2013-2018. The DAP accords with his strong personal commitment to disability and inclusion and he is associated with a number of disability and mental health organizations. He is currently Vice Chair of Studio ARTES. In recent years he has also served on the boards of Museums and Galleries of New South Wales, Arts Project Australia, the Australian Council for University Art and Design Schools, and the European Association of Outsider Art. He was a member of the Peer Review College of the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council 2005, and served as a REC member, Humanities and Creative Arts panel, for ERA 2012 and 2015.

On July 7, 1990, Colin married Nicky Mayo Rhodes, with whom he has five children: Tom, Anna, Tess, Lila, and Sophie.
