Conrad Arensberg was born on September 12, 1910. He was the first son of Charles F. C. Arensberg, a lawyer of German-English extraction who ultimately became President of the Pennsylvania Bar, and Emily Wright (Maynadier) Arensberg, of French Huguenot ancestry, whose family migrated to the American South in 1688. He was raised with his three brothers, Walter, Charles and James in Pittsburgh and its surrounds.
Arensberg received his education at the local secondary school in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. In 1927, he entered Harvard University and graduated from it in 1931.
Arensberg started his career in anthropology in Ireland in the 1930s. His first thesis was published in 1937 as The Irish Countryman: An Anthropological Study. Arensberg was also an educator, beginning a long teaching career at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1934. Except for a stint with the U.S. Army Military Intelligence during World War II, he taught for nearly fifty years at universities such as Barnard College and Columbia University. He also served as research director of UNESCO’s Institute for Social Sciences and as a consultant to the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Arensberg was a prolific author and wrote numerous books and scientific articles for journals, including American Journal of Sociology and Anthropological Quarterly, and was the editor of Human Organization and Journal of Applied Anthropology.
Dr. Arensberg, who helped found the Society of Applied Anthropology, wrote widely and diversely in his expanding field of anthropology, often in collaboration and was known for such his works as Introducing Social Change: A Manual for Community Development, Culture and Community (with Solon T. Kimball), and Technical Cooperation and Cultural Reality (with Arthur H. Niehoff).

Arensberg was married to Vivian Garrison Arensberg. He was survived by three children from a previous marriage, Emily Barton, Margaret Olson and Cornelius.
