The papers on the Last Ninety Days of the Warin NoRTH-CAROL mA, which originally appeared in the New-Y ork Watchman, and are now presented in book form, were commenced with no plan or intention of continuing them beyond two or three numbers. The unexpected favor with which they were received led to their extension, and finally resulted in their republication. To do justice to North-C arolina, and to place beyond cavil or reproach the attitude of her leaders at the close of the great Southern States Rights struggle to present a faithful picture of the times, and a just judgment, whether writing of friend or foe, has been my sole object. Slight as these sketches are, they may claim at least the merit of truth, and this, I am persuaded, is no slight recommendation with the truth-loving people of North-C (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Cornelia was born on March 20, 1825 in Harlem, New York, United States. She was the daughter of Judith (Vermeule) and James Phillips. Her father was a teacher and Presbyterian minister who emigrated from England to the United States in 1818. Her mother (sometimes called Julia) was a member of Dutch families of distinction, whose settlement in New Jersey antedated the Revolution.
Growing up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where in 1826 her father accepted the chair of mathematics at the University of North Carolina, she lived the life of that time and place though she was better educated than the average Southern girl. In addition to acquiring the customary ladylike accomplishments, she learned Latin, Greek, and mathematics, and her reading was both extensive and well-chosen.
Her first book, The Last Ninety Days of the War in North Carolina (1866), was written immediately after the Civil War at the request of her friend, Governor Zebulon Baird Vance. She distinguished herself in the years following the war by her efforts on behalf of the University of North Carolina, which was pitiably impoverished.
In 1868 the reconstruction government of the state closed the institution, and then reorganized and reopened it; after a year or two this ill-advised experiment ended in failure, and the university was closed a second time. Through all these changes Mrs. Spencer remained in Chapel Hill, writing for the conservative papers of the state accounts of the inadequacy and dishonesty of the new regime.
During 1869 she published a series of "Pen and Ink Sketches of the University of North Carolina As It Has Been" in the Raleigh Sentinel (Apr. 26-July 6, 1869). When the second closing of the university occurred she rallied the alumni, most of whom she knew personally, to the task of restoration, and by means of innumerable letters and many newspaper articles helped to crystallize public sentiment in favor of it.
The reopening of the university was finally voted by the assembly of the state on March 20, 1875, and soon she had the satisfaction of seeing it functioning usefully again under the presidency of Kemp Plummer Battle. From 1869 through the seventies she contributed a weekly column to the North Carolina Presbyterian (Charlotte, North Carolina) and in 1889 published First Steps in North Carolina History.
During her last years she lived in Cambridge, Massachussets, with her daughter and son-in-law. Cornelia Phillips Spencer died at her home in on March 11, 1908.

She had personal charm and strength of character.
On June 20, 1855, she married James Munroe Spencer, a lawyer of Clinton, Alabama, and removed to her husband's home, but after his death in 1861 she returned to Chapel Hill with her young daughter.
