Her mother’s name is Courteney Bass. Cox was the youngest of four children. She has two sisters named Virginia and Dorothy and an older brother Richard Jr. When Cox's parents split in 1974, she lived with her mother and step-father Hunter Copeland.
Education
As a child, Cox was an avid swimmer and tennis player. She studied at Mountain Brook High School. She studied architecture for a year at Mount Vernon College. However, she eventually left college to pursue a full-time career in modeling and acting in New York City.
While modeling, Cox attended acting classes, as her real dream and ambition were to be an actress. In 1984, she landed herself a small part in one episode of As the World Turns (1956) as a young débutante named Bunny. Her big break came when she was cast by Brian De Palma in the Bruce Springsteen video Dancing in the Dark. She next played a recurring role in the TV series Misfits of Science. She also appeared in TV movies, such as Sylvan in Paradise, I’ll Home for Christmas, and Curiosity Kills.
In 1985, she moved to Los Angeles and landed the role of Lauren Miller - Michael J. Fox's girlfriend on the hit series Family Ties. Fortunes changed dramatically for Cox when in 1994, she starred alongside Jim Carrey in the unexpected hit Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994).
From 1994, she started portraying Monica Geller, one of the main characters, in the TV series Friends. The series turned out to be a huge success and was loved by the audience and critics. She received several awards and nominations for her role in Friends. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Cox and her female co-stars became the highest-paid TV actresses of all time, as they were paid $1 million per episode for the last two seasons.
She came to popularity as a movie actress with her appearance in the 1996 slasher film Scream in an important role. The film was appreciated by critics and was also commercially successful. In 1997, she appeared in Scream 2, the sequel to the horror slasher Scream. Like its prequel, the film was met with positive reviews and also became a huge success commercially.

Cox struggled with the reality of aging, and turned to fillers to help combat the process. However, she has since had said fillers removed in an attempt to feel more like herself.
She also contributed to the investigation into the disappearance of Natalie Holloway Natalie was an American teen who seemingly vanished into thin air whilst on a school graduation trip to Aruba. Holloway had attended Mountain Brook High, the same school Cox herself had attended. Cox and her husband, Arquette, wanted to contribute to search efforts and came up with the idea of holding a celebrity fundraiser.
