(While the twenty-nine stories in City of Mazes bring to m...)
While the twenty-nine stories in City of Mazes bring to mind Robbe-Grillet, Duras, and Kafka, they are clearly the product of a powerful and distinct new voice. With their imagery of cruelty and self-victimization, of blood and violence, sex and love, Hendershot's stories are shocking and unsettling: we wander with fragile narrators, trapped within a nightmare world where ritual and symbol slowly evolve into an alternate view of sanity.

(As Cyndy Hendershot demonstrates, the Gothic is more a mo...)
As Cyndy Hendershot demonstrates, the Gothic is more a mode than a rigid historical period, an "invasive" tendency that reveals the imaginative limits of social realities and literary techniques far beyond its origins in late eighteenth century Britain. And as she demonstrates in this first scholarly treatment of its kind, one of the continuing obsessions of the Gothic mode is masculinity. Masculinity is in some sense a Gothic castle of the imagination, haunted by fears of the body, science, and angry colonial subjects.
