Patell received his Bachelor of Arts from Harvard College in 1983 and his Doctor of Philosophy from Harvard University in 1991.

He is currently Associate Professor of English at New York University. He is also the Associate Dean of Humanities at New York University Abu Dhabi. Before taking up his position at New York University, he was a President"s Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley.
