Dakota Lane was born on September 23, 1959, in Brooklyn, New York, United States.
Lane attended the San Francisco State University.
Lane is the author of four young adult novels and short fiction collections for adults. Lane’s first novel, Johnny Voodoo, saw print in 1996. The book’s protagonist is Deirdre, a sixteen-year-old young woman who has just suffered the loss of her mother. A Publishers Weekly contributor observed that the novel’s “mood is perfect”. Lane is the author of three another young adult novels - The Orpheus Obsession, The Secret Life of IT Girls and Gothic Lolita - which she published in 2006, 2007 and 2008 respectively.
In addition to her writing career, Lane worked as a journalist and photographer. Her works have appeared in such periodicals as the Woodstock Times, the Village Voice, the Interview Magazine, The New York Times, the Entertainment Weekly and the San Francisco Magazine.
Lane works as a teacher, as well. She has taught in libraries, bookstores and schools in the United States, as well as in special month-long workshops and literary events. Lane is currently working as a teacher with several individual clients.
