Sixteen-year-old Dayle Meryk has recently lost her beloved grandmother and is also resentful of her father's new wife and baby. Dayle's best friend, Amy, feels left out when Dayle begins to hang out with the more popular crowd which includes Keith, a handsome young athlete. When Keith's friend, Pete, starts a fire with gasoline, both he and Dayle are burned, and Pete dies. Dayle spends months in the hospital recovering, and this part of the story demonstrates the care and compassion exercised in hospital burn units. Dayle worries that her disfigurement will turn Keith away, and she soon learns who her real friends are.

Deborah Froese attended the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.
Deborah Froese has worked variously as an audio-visual producer, waitress, puppeteer, entertainer, and photographer before she has settled on the profession of writing. From 1979 to 1989 she worked at VIP Communications Ltd. in Winnipeg as an audio-visual producer and photographer. In 1994 she was a recipient of Manitoba Writers' Guild Mentorship Program. Her first book for young people The Wise Washerman: A Folktale from Burma was published in 1996. Then followed Out of the Fire in 2001, and Mr. Jacobson's Window in 2013. Froese served for ten years as a news services director at Mennonite Church Canada (2007-2017). Beginning from 2014 to 2017 Deborah was an editorial director at the writing and editing company Rebelight Publishing Incorporated and from 2018, Deborah Froese became a self-employed writer, editor, writing coach, creative writing instructor.
Deborah Froese is an award-winning fiction author with a broad portfolio of published non-fiction. Her works include books for children and young adults such as The Wise Washerman: A Folktale from Burma, Out of the Fire, and Mr. Jacobson's Window as well as numerous non-fiction articles and feature stories. The book Out of the Fire was translated into German as In meiner Haut (Beltz & Gelberg), and with four other nominees, it was shortlisted for the Deutschen Jugendliteraturpreis. In addition to writing her own stories, Deborah draws from around 20 years of experience as a writing teacher and an editor.
