1891 graduate Natural Sciences Department, Physics and Mathematics Faculty, Novorossiysk University, Odessa. 1894 graduate Medical Faculty, Kiev University.
Began research work while a student in Odessa. Expelled from university for student political activities. Admitted to Russia’s first Bacteriological Station, founded by Mechnikov in 1866.
Here he detected the phenomenon of the autosterilization of soil as a result of bacterial antagonism and carried out experiments on the infection and immunization of marmots with cholera vibrion via the intestine. 1893, together with I.G. Savchenko, immunized himself with killes cholera vibrion cultures and then checked the efficacy of immunization by taking live cholera cultures. Thereby proved that healthy persons can act as carriers of cholera and laid the basis for enteral cholera immunization.
1897 took part in Russian expedition to study plague in India, then Arabia. Proved the identical etiology of bubonic and pneumonic plague and the therapeutic effect of plague antiserum. 1898 undertook expedition through the Gobi Desert and China to Eastern Mongolia to study endemic plague in Weichan.
Then combatted plague in Mesopotamia, Persia and various parts of Russia. 1910-1911 directed expedition to study pneumonic in Manchuria and Eastern Mongolia. Proved that wild rodents help spread plague among people, developed methods of vaccination and opened a number of anti-plague laboratories.
Also took part in expeditions to combat cholera, malaria and typhus. 1903 succeeded in inducing in baboons. Observed Spyrochaeta pallida for two years prior to its official discovery in 1905 by Chaudin and Hofmann.
1898 established Russia’s first Chair of Bacteriology at Saint St. Petersburg University. Until 1928 headed this chairman Also founded Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics’s first Chair of Epidemiology at Odessa Medical Institute.
Founder and Honorary member, Microbiological Social, Leningrad. Founded International Social of Microbiologists. Attended many international conferences and congresses.
Member. Learned Council, People's Commissariat if Health. Organized courses for epidemiologists. From 1921 founder-rector, Odessa Medical Institute.
Founded Kiev Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology, now named for him. Member, Pctrograd, then Kiev City Soviet. 1921 elected member, All-Russian and All-LIkr Central Executive Committee.
Wrote some 100 works.
