From 1933 until 1938, Dankwart was a student at the Odenwaldschule in Heppenheim, Germany. He graduated from Queens College and received a Doctor of Philosophy in political science in 1951 from Yale.
Rustow specialized in Middle Eastern studies, teaching for some forty-five years at schools in the United States and abroad. His early career saw work at Oglethorpe University from 1950 to 1952 followed by seven years at Princeton University, which included field research in Turkey. Next, Rustow joined the Columbia University faculty for eleven years, ultimately serving as professor of international social forces. He rounded out his career at City University of New York from 1970 until 1995. He also found time for visiting lecturer or professor stints at schools such as Hunter College, Yale University, University of Heidelberg, and London School of Economics and Political Science. During his career, Rustow was on the governing board of the Middle East Institute and was a vice president of the Middle East Studies Association.
Dankwart married Rachel Aubrey Rustow, a daughter of Adolph Lowe, and Tamar Gottlieb Rustow, but both those marriages failed. He had sons Timothy and Stephen, and two daughters Janet and Marina. Also he was married to Dr. Margrit Wreschner for 18 years. He also had three grandchildren.
