He first studied haiku poetry under Saimaro Shiimoto.
Career
Wrote ukiyo-zoshi, or novels dealing with town life in his period, after the fashion of Saikaku Ihara whom he admired. After the death of Saikaku, he moved to Naniwa (Osaka) and lived in the hermitage where Saikaku had spent his last years. His efforts were responsible for the publication of many works of Saikaku discovered after his death.
