(Jacques Lacan is now regarded as a major psychoanalytical...)
Jacques Lacan is now regarded as a major psychoanalytical theorist alongside Freud and Jung, although recognition has been delayed by fierce arguments over his ideas. Written by a leading Lacanian analyst, "Introducing Lacan" guides the reader through his innovations, including his work on paranoia, his addition of structural linguistics to Freudianism and his ideas on the infant 'mirror phase'. It also traces Lacan's influence in postmodern critical thinking on art, literature, philosophy and feminism. This is the ideal introduction for anyone intrigued by Lacan's ideas but discouraged by the complexity of his writings.

(Why do men tend to keep love letters in files along with ...)
Why do men tend to keep love letters in files along with their other correspondence, whereas women often keep them with their clothes? And if a letter is written but not sent, at whom is it really directed? As Darian Leader shows, such questions go to the heart of sexual desire, which is never addressed to our flesh and blood companion, but always to something beyond him or her. Why Do Women Write More Letters than They Post? is a provocative inquiry into the fundamental loneliness of each sex. Although a woman is essential to a man's sexual life, why is the reverse far from the case? Why should relationships frequently run aground on the trivial question, "What are you thinking?" If a man chooses as his partner a woman unlike his mother, why does he try to make her behave toward him exactly as his mother did when he was a boy? Why might a woman decide not to spend the night with a man after seeing his apartment, whereas for a man this would be unthinkable? And have you ever loved someone who did not make you feel guilty? A unique contribution to the study of the sexes, Why Do Women Write More Letters than They Post? moves from high to low culture as it teases out the intriguing, at times startling, insights of contemporary psychoanalysis.

Rather than focusing on the internal development of Freud's work, or his place in psychology's literary canon, this text explores the specific research questions that preoccupied him and shows how his responses were formed and modified by debate with his colleagues.

An exploration of the psychology of art observation is based on the 1911 theft of the Mona Lisa, noting how a vast number of people went to look at the empty place in the Louvre where the painting once stood; and considers what art represents, its creative process, the reasons people look at art, and the costs associated with masterpieces.

(What happens when we lose someone we love? A death, a sep...)
What happens when we lose someone we love? A death, a separation or the break-up of a relationship are some of the hardest times we have to live through. We may fall into a nightmare of depression, lose the will to live and see no hope for the future. What matters at this crucial point is whether or not we are able to mourn. In this important and groundbreaking book, acclaimed psychoanalyst and writer Darian Leader urges us to look beyond the catch-all concept of depression to explore the deeper, unconscious ways in which we respond to the experience of loss. In so doing, we can loosen the grip it may have upon our lives.

Madness, in our culture, is defined by visibility. From the popular press to TV soaps and films, the depiction of madness always borders on the extreme: violent outbursts, fits, hallucinations.

Nigel Cooke's large-scale paintings construct a dark and melancholic world, populated by artists and philosophers dwarfed by the moody voids of color surrounding them. Reminiscent of the murkiness of backdrops in a dream, the isolate fragility of Giacometti and the more romantic climes of Caspar David Friedrich, Cooke's paintings have invented a new idiom for the portrayal of the figure.
