James attended St. Paul’s School, Concord, New Hampshire. He graduated from Colby College, Waterville, Maine with a B.A. degree.
James worked as a researcher at Newsweek, New York in 1958-1963, as a correspondent in Los Angeles in 1963-1966. He was also a bureau chief in Washington, D.C. in 1966-1977 and a Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Energy in 1978-1979.
Nowadays, Bishop is far from retirement in Sedona, creating screenplays, two novels and also advancing the cause of Sedona Recycles, Keep Sedona Beautiful, public art and Vision Sedona, the nonpartisan citizens group. His creative writing classes are ongoing at various Elderhostel locations, Northern Arizona University, and Yavapai College.
