Darren Almond studied at Winchester School of Art. He graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Darren Almond emerged to the art scene in the middle of the 1990s. In 1995, he presented his installation KN120 in the form of the big ceiling fan placed under London’s Westway and wired to his workshop. It was featured empty with an industrial flip-clock on the wall in his video ‘A Real Time Piece’. Other works of the period were related to moving and included a series of train plaques and a film ‘Schwebebahn’ that featured the Sky Train, Wuppertal's public transport system.
A series of night photographs, ‘Fullmoon’ consisting of full moon shots taken with a long exposure time of fifteen minutes appeared in 1998.
In 2001, the artist traveled to Karaganda, Kazakhstan where he shot his next film entitled ‘Mine’ that showed the everyday working life at the local tin mine. The video consists of two parts, the one in color and the second in black and white. The next Almond’s artistic journey, this time to Tibet resulted in a photo series ‘Infinite Betweens’. Later, in 2006, it was developed into a film ‘In the Between’ telling about the new high-speed train that united China with Tibet. It was the artist’s interpretation of the Buddhist philosophy about the relativity of all beings and things whose ‘in-between’ state is eternal.
In 2018, his work commissioned to decorate the Crossrail’s Bond Street Station was presented to the public for the first time.
Since the debut solo show in 1995, Almond has regularly exhibited nationally and internationally, including the London's Institute of Contemporary Arts, Tate Britain, the Renaissance Society, Chicago, the Kunsthalle Zürich, Switzerland, and the Biennales in Berlin, Venice, and Moscow.
Nowadays, Darren Almond lives and works in London.
