Darya Domracheva, in full Darya Vladimirovna Domracheva, is a former Belarusian biathlete. Active in the Biathlon World Cup from 2006 to 2018, she became the most decorated Olympic athlete of Belarus, in winter sports, earning four gold medals at the Olympics. A two-time World Champion and several-time World Cup overall winner, she is the first female biathlete to have three gold medals in individual races at a single Olympics.
Background
Darya Domracheva was born on August 3, 1986 in Minsk, Byelorussian SSR, Soviet Union (present-day Minsk, Belarus). She is a daughter of Vladimir Filipovich Domrachev and Larisa Alekseevna Domracheva, both architects. Domracheva has an elder brother, Nikita.
Education
Darya Domracheva whose first name was chosen by her father spent the first years of her life in Minsk. Affectionately called by her mother Dashen'ka, Dashulya, Darenka, or Danchik, she was a restless girl. The Domrachevs encouraged their children's aspiration for active lifestyle, and the kid's room was equipped with a horizontal bar, rope, and swing, made by the head of the family.
In 1990, the family of young architects relocated to Nyagan, a town in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District of Russian Federation, which was under construction at the time. While there, Darya took dance lessons and played basketball, and two years after relocation, following her elder brother, took up cross-country skiing. Trained by Andrei Doroshenko, Darya easily won her major competitors who were boys, not girls. At the age of 12, she entered a newly-opened biathlon School of Olympic Reserve in Nyagan where Albert Musin became her first coach in the discipline.
The impressive sporting achievements didn't disturb brilliant studies. After finishing economic and legal class of a gymnasium in 2002, Domracheva studied sport management at the University of Tyumen for a year. She then came back to Minsk with the family and pursued her studies at the Belarusian State Economic University in tourism management. Domracheva graduated in 2009 with a thesis on advertising in tourism industry. That same year, she joined the Commercial Law Department of the University and received her second higher education degree in 2015.
The athletic career of Darya Domracheva began in Russian Federation where she was included in the biathlon squad of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District in 2001. Two years later, the young biathlete earned her first medal, the silver in relay at the Youth Olympic Festival in Slovenia. That same year, Dasha came back to Minsk with her family.
Many-time junior champion of Russian Federation and medallist of several European competitions, including the 2004 Biathlon Junior World Championships, Domracheva was expelled from the national team early in 2004. Soon, the athlete accepted the invitation to compete for the Belarus Biathlon Team and started trainings in its squad. The debut at the 2005 Biathlon Junior World Championships in Kontiolahti, Finland, as a Belarusian athlete resulted in the victories in sprint and pursuit, followed by a bronze medal in pursuit at the next Junior World Championships.
On December 1, 2006, Darya Domracheva competed in sprint in her first BMW IBU World Cup and finished 16th, the second result in the team. At the 2007 Biathlon Junior World Championships, Domracheva added two silver medals to her credit, in sprint and pursuit.
The next season was of importance to success and experience at once. At the 5th World Cup stage in Ruhpolding, Germany, the biathlete took her first individual medal, bronze in sprint, and then was second and third on the podium. The achievements were overshadowed a little by Domracheva's mistake at the stage in Oberhof where she shot standing instead of prone in mass start, that led to her withdrawing from the race.
Domracheva added to her fame in the same discipline in the 2009/10 season. Leading in the race, she mixed up the targets and made three shots on the targets of range 2 instead of range 1. However, three penalty laps didn't disturb her to finish 9th. The rest of the season brought her bronze medal in Women's 15 km individual at the XXI Olympics in Vancouver, two gold medals at the World Cup stage in Kontiolahti, Finland, and silver medal in Holmenkollen, Norway.
Darya Domracheva finished the next season in the sixth overall place and became the major competitor of Magdalena Neuner of Germany, the favorite for the Biathlon World Cup overall victory in the 2011/12 season. The rivalry ended up with the win of Neuner who earned 28 more points than Domracheva.
Darya came to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi as the World Champion in pursuit and mass start. She picked up the first medal of the competition, gold, in 10 km pursuit on February 11, then had another one in 15 km individual race, and ended up with the third gold medal in mass start. That was a triumph. In June of that same year, Domracheva completed her service at the State Security Committee of the Republic of Belarus, to which the Biathlon Federation of Belarus is attached, as senior lieutenant.
The 2014/15 season wasn't less triumphant that the previous Olympic. The biathlete won the Overall World Cup title for the first and last time in her career, surpassing her major rival, Kaisa Mäkäräinen of Finland, by 48 points. The Sprint World Cup overall title has also gone to Domracheva at the end of that season.
In August 2015, Domracheva announced that she would skip the coming season because of mononucleosis. The biathlete was also out of the first three stages of the 2016/17 World Cup as she had given birth to a daughter on October 1, 2016. Coming back to competitions on January the next year, Domracheva had a glorious victory at the World Championships with a silver medal in pursuit.
The 2018 Winter Olympics wasn't as rich in success as the 2014 Games in Sochi. However, Domracheva added a silver medal in mass start to her individual achievements and contributed to the victory of the Belarussian national team in relay. The number of earned points by the end of the season placed her 3rd overall in the Biathlon World Cup. On June 25 of that year, Darya Domracheva announced her retirement from sport. Following her husband, a famed biathlete Ole Einar Björndalen, who was named head coach of the Chinese Biathlon Team in September 2019, Darya Domracheva became the coach of the country's Women's Biathlon squad.
Darya Domracheva is the most decorated person of all Belarusian Olympic athletes (either in the history of the Winter or Summer competitions) who represented Belarus as an independent country. She is also the first Olympic biathlete to win all three medals in individual disciplines.
Having 35 wins and 81 podiums of the 310 starts at the Biathlon World Cup to her credit, Domracheva is a holder of six World Cup titles in various disciplines in addition to the Biathlon World Cup overall victory in the season of 2014-15.
After winning the bronze medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics, Domracheva was named the Female Athlete of the Year in Belarus and made Honored Master of Sports of Belarus. For the three wins in the individual disciplines of the 2014 Winter Olympics, she was awarded the Hero of Belarus title on February 17, the only woman in the history of the country. Domracheva's fans in Belarus used a song of a Belarusian rock band J:Mors titled 'Belarusian Gold' to express their love and admiration for the biathlete.
