(A touching, sincere and detailed story of one of the most...)
A touching, sincere and detailed story of one of the most eminent biathletes in the history of the sport told in the first person (French Edition). Illustrated by a Russian girl Oksana Pinchuk who was only 14 as of creating the pictures.
Martin Fourcade is a French former biathlete. A five-time Olympic champion and thirteen-time World Champion (individual and team competition), he has won overall World Cup standings seven times what is a record as of 2020. He also holds the record for the number of Major Championships titles earned in a row in every major championship from 2011 to 2018.
Background
Ethnicity:
As Martin Fourcade has asserted himself, he has Spanish roots.
Martin Fourcade was born on September 14, 1988 in Céret, France. He is the second son of Marcel and Gisèle Fourcade. Martin has two brothers, Brice and Simon, who is a former biathlete.
Education
In Martin Fourcade's family, sport was always well-respected. Raised in the Pyrenees region, he saw his parents practicing cross country skiing at the amateur level. In 2001, Martin Fourcade entered Lycée et Collège Climatique et Sportif Pierre de Coubertin, a sports-oriented high school in Font-Romeu-Odeillo-Via.
While studying at the lycee, Martin tried his hand at swimming, cycling, snowboarding, and hockey. Like his elder brother, Simon, he also practiced Nordic skiing and triathlon. When Simon switched from ski section to biathlon, Martin followed in his footsteps. In 2004, the boy was sent to the ski center in Prémanon, Jura, where he was trained under Stephane Boutier and Franck Badiou, who later became a shooting instructor for the French national biathlon team. The coaches noted Fourcade's determination and high motivation.
Martin Fourcade emerged on the biathlon scene in 2003 and made his international debut as a junior three years later. His first years in the sport weren't triumphant at all. The young athlete always got into the points zone but had no victories and earned no individual medals, except for the bronze in team competition (relay) at the 2007 Biathlon Junior World Championships.
Fourcade's first start at the World Cup took place at the end of the next season, on March 13 at Oslo, Holmenkollen, Norway, and he finished 61st in the sprint. Drafted into the French Army later, in October, he became a member of the national military ski team. By 2009, Martin earned his first World Cup points at Hochfilzen, Austria, finishing 36th in the individual race and 10th in the sprint. The 8th place in pursuit in that year World Championships held in Pyeongchang, China, and the 4th place in relay placed him 24th in the overall World Cup following the season.
Martin Fourcade improved his results at the beginning of the upcoming Olympic season since he regularly placed in the top 10 at the World Cup events. Fourcade joined the national biathlon team at the Vancouver Olympic Games alongside his brother Simon. A silver medal that Martin won on February 21 in mass start finishing with three shooting penalties 10 seconds behind Evgeny Ustyugov of Russia became his first podium for a World Cup event. The French relay four consisting of Olympic Champion Vincent Jay, Vincent Defrasne, Martin and his brother Simon placed sixth in the event.
Martin continued to excel on the piste after the Games. He became first in World Cup pursuit at Kontiolahti, Finland, adding two gold medals, in the sprint and again in pursuit, at Oslo, Holmenkollen, Norway. The achievements pushed Fourcade to the 5th row in the Overall World Cup following the biathlon year and initiated his collection of crystal globes since he topped World Cup Overall pursuit rankings due to two victories in that discipline during the season.
The first post-Olympic year was again full of wins for Fourcade. The good results that he showed in the first half of the 2010-2011 season made him one of the favorites to the World Championships held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, that year. The expectations paid off when he led the French team to victory in the first race of the Championships, mixed relay, teaming with Marie-Laure Brunet, Marie Dorin and Alexis Boeuf.
As to the individual medals for the event, Martin Fourcade earned the silver in the sprint, being defeated by Arnd Peiffer of Germany, and the gold in the pursuit surpassing Emil Hegle Svendsen of Norway despite three penalties on the shooting ranges. The French Genius improved his positions in the World Cup rankings placing 3rd in the overall standing, 4th in the sprint, 2nd in the pursuit, 3rd in the individual and 2nd in the mass start following the season.
The next goal of the incredible Frenchman was to conquer the top rank of the World Cup Overall rankings. He began to fulfill the task right from the first stage of the 2011-2012 season which took place at Östersund, Sweden. Both the pursuit and the individual race ended up with gold medals for the biathlete. The gains made were consolidated at the World Championships in Ruhpolding, Germany, where Fourcade earned three golds – sprint, pursuit and mass start – and a silver in the individual race.
Besides, Fourcade's dream to stand at one podium with his brother finally came true that same year. In Nové Město na Moravě, Czech Republic, Martin placed third in the sprint after Simon and winner Emil Hegle Svendsen. The first rank in the overall standings of the World Cup was ensured to Fourcade, as he planned himself. The success was crowned by two small crystal globes for leading in overall sprint and pursuit rankings.
Fourcade dominated through the whole next biathlon year as well. The first stage at the Swedish Östersund was begun by the gold medal in the individual race and pursuit, when the upcoming ones turned to be not so productive because of the shoulder luxation received in Oberhof, Germany. However, at the 2013 World Championships in Nové Město na Moravě, Fourcade added the gold for the 20 km individual race and four silvers to his credit.
The French Genius performed admirably in Sochi, Russia, during the pre-Olympic stage. He again finished first in the individual race missing only once and in the sprint, without any penalty laps, surpassing the silver medalist for 40 seconds. Fourcade finished the pre-Olympic season as the leader of the World Cup Overall, setting the new record for the points scored with 421. The small Crystal Globes in all kinds of races were given to Fourcade as well.
The major sport event of the four years, second for Martin, turned to be more successful comparing to the previous one. In Sochi, Fourcade added three more Olympic medals to his silver from Vancouver, two golds (individual race and pursuit) and silver in mass start succeeding first place to his long-time rival, Svendsen of Norway.
With four Olympic titles in total by the time, Martin became already the most decorated French athlete in the history of the Winter Olympics. Besides, by the end of the season, Fourcade earned his third overall World Cup title. The 20 consecutive podiums in the next one, from Östersund to Tyumen, provided him with the fourth title.
Before the start of the 2015-16 biathlon season, the noted French biathlete tried himself in cross-country skiing. He competed in a 15 km freestyle FIS race at Beitostølen, Norway, and a 10 km freestyle at the Cross-Country World Cup at Ruka, Finland. The first biathlon World Cup stage started in Östersund ended up for Fourcade with two victories, in the sprint and the pursuit. The silver in the sprint and gold in the pursuit at Hochfilzen, Austria, was followed by quite a mediocre stage for such a decorated biathlete in the Polish Pokljuka where he was only third for the most world cup points earned.
Fourcade rematched during the North American stage winning the Canmore sprint, the single mixed relay with Marie Dorin Habert, and defeating Johannes Thingnes Bø in the Presque Isle pursuit. After the brilliant World Championships in Oslo with three gold medals and one silver in non-team disciplines, Martin became the second most winningest biathlete, after Ole Einar Bjørndalen, for non-team gold medals at the World Cups. One of the most successful seasons in the noted Frenchman's career ended with the fifth (and consecutive) overall World Cup title as well as by the entire collection of globes in all the disciplines, the same as it was in 2013.
The victory in the sprint, Kontiolahti, Finland, at the sunset of the 2017 season helped Fourcade surpass Ole Einar Bjørndalen for the most individual disciplines won in one season. Besides, the French Genius set a record for many podiums at the World Cup. The first thoughts of leaving professional sport were expressed by Martin right after that stage.
However, Fourcade joined the French team at the Pyeonchang Winter Olympics. The national team's flagbearer, the noted Frenchman brought home 3 gold medals – in the pursuit, mass start and mixed relay. The intestinal infection and a broken pole after the Olympics didn't prevent Fourcade from having 22 individual World Cup podiums by the end of that biathlon campaign. Following the season, he earned his seventh World Cup Overall title and held all five crystal globes for the fourth time.
The biathlon campaign of 2018-19 turned to be the poorest in Fourcade's career. The rivalry for leading in the World Cup Overall with Norwegian Johannes Thingnes Bø which started right from the first stage ended up with the interim victory of the latter in Slovenian Pokljuka. However, Martin managed to have the 75th personal medal in his career placing first in the individual race.
Only 5th place in pursuit and 9th in mass start at Nové Město na Moravě put Fourcade down to the 5th row in the overall standings. In Ruhpolding, the Frenchman stayed again outside the podium and set an antirecord of six consecutive races without wins, the first time for eight years. The series of unsuccessful performances pushed him to skip some World Cup stages for better preparation for the World Championship.
At the stage in Italian Antholz, Fourcade didn't earn medals but managed to improve his position in the World Cup Overall to the 2nd. The hiatus of six weeks that followed was marked by a sore throat. Though the illness withdrew Fourcade from training sessions for a while, it didn't disturb him to qualify for the World Championships in Östersund, Sweden.
The triumph didn't happen, however. The 6th place in the sprint and 5th in the pursuit became the best results of Fourcade at the event, and the individual race ended with the 39th place what was the worst result in his career. Following the season, the incredible Frenchman placed only 12th in the World Cup Overall but stated that he was ready to do his best to return to his previous level the next year of competition.
Martin Fourcade did keep the promise. The first podium after such a long absence of victories happened at Östersund where Fourcade finished first in the individual race. It helped him to regain the leading position in the World Cup Overall. Although the races of the rest of the calendar year weren't victorious for the Frenchman he always placed in the top ten.
At Oberhof, Martin Fourcade, in the absence of his main rival Bø, led the French team to the second place in relay and earned personal gold medals in the sprint and mass start. At Ruhpolding, with Bø still absent, Fourcade won the sprint and pursuit without misses at shooting stages. The World Championships in Rasen-Antholz provided the Frenchman with a bronze medal in sprint and a gold medal in the individual race. The 11th World Championships title placed Fourcade alongside Bjørndalen's achievements for this nomination.
The stage in Holmenkollen which should be the last in the season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The biathlon year ended at Finnish Kontiolahti with a reduced number of races and without spectators. On the eve of the final race which took place on March 14, Martin Fourcade announced his retirement from the professional sport in social media. The French Genius won his last pursuit sharing the podium with his compatriots Emilien Jacquelin and Quentin Fillon Maillet.
Following the final season in his career, Martin Fourcade added two small crystal globes to his collection of trophies, for leading in the World Cup Overall sprint and individual race rankings.

Views
Martin Fourcade has always been an advocate of a healthy lifestyle and a staunch fighter against doping. Believing that the only way to win is the own strength of the athlete and his hard work, Fourcade has roundly condemned any possible facts of using various stimulant drugs by his rivals. After the big doping scandal related to the results of the Russian athletes at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, the Frenchman missed no opportunity to touch upon the topic in interviews.
Another controversial incident related to Fourcade's short temper took place in 2017 at the World Cup stage in Hochfilzen, Austria. During the passing of the baton in men's relay, he brushed the Russian biathlete, Alexander Loginov, and the latter fell on the ski run. Later, at the awarding ceremony, all the Russian team refused to shake hands with Fourcade who, in his turn, walked out of the podium defiantly. Many biathlon fans expressed their disappointment in such a behavior of the noted Frenchman. Fourcade and Loginov reconciled eventually.
A year earlier, Fourcade, being an extremely emotional person, became terribly disappointed by the fact that the then long-time head coach of the French team, and one of his best friends in combination, Siegfried Mazet, switched to the Norwegian biathlon team. After that, Fourcade broke almost all friendly relations with Mazet.
One of the most decorated biathletes in the history of the sport, Fourcade is sought after by advertisers. Taking part in many advertising campaigns, including those of one of his major sponsors, Rossignol, the French biathlon star has repeatedly stated that his main criteria in the choice of the partner to cooperate with is his own interest in the subject of the cooperation, as well as its image and form, and not the estimated income amount. Fourcade doesn't have a personal agent, only a lawyer.
Quotations:
"I indeed set new challenges. I wish to attend the World Cup skiing. I managed to find other sources of motivation. I think it is necessary for an athlete so that it remains competitive."
"The Olympic Games are held every four years. Meanwhile, there are a lot of things to live. Last season, it was not an Olympic season and I had a very good year, with the overall victory in the World Cup and world titles. I know that the Olympics are not everything. There are things to do before you get there."
"I have often wondered if this was the case when I first got on skis 30 years ago in my native Pyrenees. I think I simply followed that trail in the snow drawn by my brother Simon, like many little brothers... I was encouraged by these sensations of skiing and the happiness of evolving in this extraordinary environment. I liked it. Passionately..."
"[...] I have fulfilled my dreams and experienced the most beautiful emotions. I fought and I won. I suffered, too. I fell and I got up again. Most of all, I grew up. With the amazing opportunity to see my sport growing. [...] The sport I love, to which I have dedicated a good part of my life, and which in return has given me everything."
"My passion for my sport is intact. My love for sport in general, and the values of surpassing oneself and respect for others that it transmits, is greater than ever. It is in this universe that I want to continue to express myself, to invest myself, to share."
"[...] It is difficult to keep motivation constantly. I have won a lot, but there comes the point when one wants to discover something different and take advantage of other opportunities."
Personality
Martin Fourcade has revealed himself as a reliable, ambitious and highly determined person, both in sport and everyday life. His unquenchable rush of winning and self-improvement are combined with certain egocentrism and even eccentricity. The latter trait has been very clear many times during the competitions as Fourcade has never been embarrassed by expressing openly his emotions, either discontent or happiness. The habit to grandstand after passing the shooting range (emotional, toying gestures addressed to the spectators), tactical "hide-and-seek" with rivals on the piste, clapping or jumping at the finish line or closer to the end of the distance became the hallmark of the French King of Biathlon.
Nonetheless, Fourcade has never been obsessed with his victories. Three times in his career, he gifted the earned World Cup medals to children who are his supporters. So, he passed his gold for the sprint at Russian Khanty-Mansiysk in 2015 to a schoolgirl named Dasha. Two years later, he easily parted with his gold medal won in mass start at Annecy, and in 2018, made a six-year-old Russian Veronica happy by presenting her with his silver medal for mass start at Kontiolahti. The family of the Fourcade's young fan later thanked the noted biathlete on Facebook. It should be noted however that the tradition of sharing the medals concerned only the World Cup ones, the Olympic and World Championships trophies have been always kept by Fourcade.
Martin Fourcade is a devoted father and social media star. He speaks French and English fluently and has a little command of Spanish as well. He has stated many times that his beloved place for both traveling and training is Norway. Famous for his sophisticated sense of humor, the French Genius once joked answering the question on the secret of his constant wins that "it's all about his DNA."
Physical Characteristics:
Martin Fourcade is 1.85 meters tall. He is right-handed.
Fourcade suffered from mononucleosis before the 2014-15 season. He also had such injuries as broken wrist and shoulder luxation (twice) during his athletic career.
Quotes from others about the person
Mathieu Garcia, French biathlete: "That was a very great opportunity for me. He really taught me some good tips and I always try to put them into practice so I can improve. He is someone that I look up to a lot. Since I met him I would watch videos of his victories and it has really inspired me."
