Attie attended the Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas, in 1940, and the Cooper Union School of Art in New York City, 1941-42. He also studied at the Alexey Brodovitch Design Laboratory at The New School for Social Research, New York City, from 1958 to 1962, and says that Brodovitch was a major influence in his work.
Attie is a freelance photographer and, since 1975, has also been teaching at the School of Visual Arts and The New School for Social Research, both in Manhattan. He has been a member of ASMP since 1962 and served on their board of governors in 1973-74.
Attie is the recipient of many awards; several were awarded him by the Art Directors Club: by the Metropolitan Washington Chapter, a Certificate of Merit (June 1973), a Gold Medal (June 1969), and a Distinctive Merit Award (June 1967); by the New Jersey Chapter, an Award for Excellence in Print (January 1970); and by the New York Chapter, a Certificate of Merit at the 49th Annual Exhibition (1969) and a Certificate of Merit (1966). For the years 1970 and 1972-73, the American Institute of Graphic Arts awarded the artist a Certificate of Excellence, and, in 1971 he received a Certificate of Merit from the Society of Publication Designers.
He has been a member of ASMP since 1962 and served on their board of governors in 1973-74.
