After graduating New Utrecht High School, Max Desfor attended Brooklyn College for only a year then quit. He began working as a messenger with the Associated Press (AP), where his brother was a photo retoucher. He taught himself photography basics and was hired as a staff photographer in 1938.
In 1979 Max Desfor became photo editor, then photo director of U.S. News & World Report. He worked for the Associated Press from 1933 to 1978, as a photographer, photo editor, foreign and war correspondent, and as head of Wide World photos. He also was Asia photo editor, based in Tokyo. Max Desfor is president of the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan.
