David B. Brooks was born in 1933 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.
He first attended Oregon State University (1955-56), then the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California (1956- 57). He completed his bachelor's degree at California State University in Northndge in 1961.
From 1975 to 1978 he worked as a technical/ feature editor for Petersen’s Photographic Magazine, for which he later was a contributing editor.
Since 1975 Brook's work has primarily consisted of "illustrative and experimental photography in conjunction with writing on technique. [His] personal work (is) limited to landscape, nature and figure photography."
He is a member of the Photographic Society of America, ASMP, NPPA, and SPE.
