(A saxophonist’s murder is only the first shot fired in a ...)
A saxophonist’s murder is only the first shot fired in a citywide war. All great blues musicians chase something. Raymond "Strong" Carlisle calls it "the deep sweet" - that perfect note that always seems to sit just out of reach. For decades he has made crowds swing, made women smile, and earned the respect of some of the greats. But as long as he strained for the deep sweet, nothing he did with his baritone sax seemed to matter. Chasing that fantasy has led him here, to lie in the rain beneath a sycamore, counting his bullet holes as he dies.

Jude McManus has landed on his feet. Following time in the army, he scored work as an "executive protection specialist" in El Salvador, where he safeguards a hydrologist for good money and gets to surf during his downtime. But this slice of paradise comes with post-civil-war dangers, and distance won’t erase his cruel memories of Chicago. Ten years earlier, his cop father was outed as part of the Laugh Masters, a group of police officers investigated for robbing and brutally beating drug dealers. In the wake of the scandal, the family fell apart, and his father died under suspicious circumstances.

(The most notorious love letters in American history - sup...)
The most notorious love letters in American history - supposedly destroyed a century ago - mysteriously reappear, and become the coveted prize in a fierce battle for possession that brings back to life the lawless world evoked in the letters themselves. Lisa Balamaro is an ambitious arts lawyer with a secret crush on her most intriguing client: former rodeo rider and reformed art forger, Tuck Mercer. In his newfound role as expert in Old West artifacts, Tuck gains possession of the supposedly destroyed correspondence between Doc Holliday and his cousin and childhood sweetheart, Mattie - who would become Sister Mary Melanie of the Sisters of Mercy. Given the unlikelihood the letters can ever be fully authenticated, Tuck retains Lisa on behalf of the letters’ owner, Rayella Vargas, to sell them on the black market. But the buyer Tuck finds, a duplicitous judge from the Tombstone area, has other, far more menacing ideas.

David Corbett was born on June 22, 1953, in Columbus, Ohio, United States. He has a brother.
David Corbett received his Bachelor of Science degree at Ohio State University in 1976. That was followed by the studies at the University of California in Berkeley.
Before starting a writing career, David Corbett was a private investigator with a prominent San Francisco-based firm for nearly fifteen years. He interviewed witnesses in civil and criminal litigations: from slip-and-fall cases to murders. In 1996 David joined his wife’s law office where he worked till her death in 2001.
The first novel Corbett wrote, The Devil’s Redhead, was sold in 2000. It's a thriller about a reformed pot smuggler trying to save his ex-girlfriend from the deadly consequences of her own misguided sympathy. A contributor to Deadly Pleasures remarked that "the writing is strong and engrossing, the characters are richly developed, the storytelling is surprisingly self-assured, the story itself is a grand and tragic one, and there is every reason to both praise this debut and eagerly await what will come from this new author's pen."
The second novel, Done For a Dime, begins with the murder of a blues legend and turns into a battle for the soul of a small town. The work became a New York Times Notable Book and was nominated for a Macavity award.
The following Corbett's novel, Blood of Paradise, was nominated for the Edgar and numerous other awards, and was named both a San Francisco Chronicle Notable Book and one of the Top Ten Mysteries and Thrillers of 2007 by the Washington Post.
After that, Corbett published Do They Know I'm Running?, named one of the top ten crime fiction books of 2010 by January Magazine, The Art of Character, The Mercy, and the novella The Devil Prayed and Darkness Fell.
In 2018, Corbett wrote The Long-Lost Love Letters of Doc Holliday, which is considered to be the most ambitious novel of his career. This is a tour de force mixture of an epistolary novel, historical romance, courtroom drama, and action thriller.
In addition to the writing career, Corbett gives seminars and workshops at conferences throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
