He is the director of the Illinois Genetic Algorithms Laboratory (IlliGAL) and the chief scientist of Nextumi Incorporated. He is the author of Genetic Algorithms in Search, Optimization and Machine Learning, one of the most cited books in computer science. David East. He has collaborated with several evolutionary computation scientists including Kalyanmoy Deb, Jeff Horn, and Hillol Kargupta.
In 2003 David Goldberg was appointed as the first holder of Jerry South. Dobrovolny Professorship in Entrepreneurial Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
