Aged 16, David English joined the local Christchurch Times and then had a brief period with the News at Portsmouth, moving to London before he was 20.
English began his newspaper career in 1951 at the Daily Mirror before moving to the Daily Sketch, firstly as Features Editor and then Editor. He was a foreign correspondent and foreign editor for the Express, which led to him covering the 1968 United States presidential election. That assignment resulted in the book Divided They Stand, which he wrote with other Daily Express staffers. English joined Associated Newspapers, owner of The Daily Mail, in 1969 and was named editor in 1971. He took the paper from its position as a struggling tabloid to a must-read for the middle class and along the way he founded a chain of free papers that he eventually sold to Rupert Murdoch for a good sum.
He died of a stroke 10 June 1998 in London, England.
David was a prominent supporter of the Conservative government of Margaret Thatcher.
English married Irene Mainwood in 1954, and they had three children.
