Gage was admitted to the bar in England in 1981 and to the Hong Kong bar in 1987. Admission to the bar in England and Wales is the step by which barristers are called to practise in that jurisdiction.
Hong Kong has adopted a common law system distinct from the legal system in Mainland China. His 1987 admission in Hong Kong therefore placed him within that separate legal jurisdiction.
