David Andrew Gemmell was a British author. He is best known for his book "Legend". For all his life he wrote write over thirty novels.

David Andrew Gemmell was born on August 1, 1948 in London, United Kingdom. He was raised alone by his mother until the age of six. He experienced a harsh upbringing in a tough urban area, suffering bullying and taunts from his peers, partly due to the absence of his father, and often sustained serious injuries through fighting. Preferring reading books to fighting, he was induced to take up boxing by his stepfather, who insisted he learn how to stand up for himself.
Education
David attended Faraday Comprehensive School. He was expelled from school at the age of sixteen for organizing a gambling syndicate.
Career
Gemmell worked as a labourer, a lorry-driver's mate and a nightclub bouncer; worked for Pepsi Cola, London, in 1965. Since 1966 he worked as a journalist for several local newspapers in East Sussex, eventually becoming editor-in-chief for five. He worked as an editor at Hastings Observer in 1976, at Folkestone Herald in 1984. His first book "Legend" was published in 1984. In 1986 he became a full-time writer. On July 28, 2006 Gemmell died of coronary artery disease.
Achievements
David wrote over thirty novels in total. Gemmell's books have sold more than one million copies. In 2008, the David Gemmell Awards for Fantasy were established, intended to "restore fantasy to its proper place in the literary pantheon"; a steering group of 18 authors is chaired by writer Stan Nicholls and the award is decided by a public vote.
