Levinson studied at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, United States. In 1972 he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. In two years he became a Master of Fine Arts.
In 1968 David went to work as a color printer at Berkey К & L Gallery of Photographic Arts. Before that, he was a studio manager for Bob Richardson Fashion Studio from 1965 to 1968. In 1964 he worked as a technician for Stewart Color Laboratory. Most of his work is in color, often with the use of multiple printing. Since 1975 Levinson has been an assistant professor of art at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia.
