From 1962 to 1964 Lyman worked as a freelance photographer. In 1964 he worked as a staff photographer for Magnum Film Production in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. He held this position until 1965. From 1965 to 1967 Lyman worked as a U.S. Navy journalist. In this year he became a freelance photojournalist.
Lyman founded the Maine Photographic Workshop in 1973, and has continued to work as the director. Also, he is an editor of various magazines, The Student Skier, Goose City Gazette, Cape Resorter, The Mount Snow Valley News and The Transit (a U.S. Navy monthly).
