Miller was born on September 5, 1934 in Citronelle, Alabama, United States; the son of Richard and Merle (King) Miller.
Miller received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1958 and a Master of Arts degree in 1961 from the University of Minnesota. Also in 1966, he was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of California.
Miller began his career as a high school teacher at Minneapolis Public Schools in 1958 and held it for a year. In 1961, he took the same position at Brooklyn Center Public School, where he worked until 1962. Then in 1964, David became an instructor at Mankato State University (nowadays Minnesota State University).
In 1966, he was appointed an assistant professor and then a professor at Purdue University, where he served until his retirement in 1998 as a professor emeritus of English. Also Miller held a position of a director of graduate studies in English at the same university from 1986 to 1989. In 1989, he became an associate dean of the Graduate School at Purdue University and held it for three years. In addition, he taught at the University of South Florida.
Miller was a president of Booster Club from 1988 to 1989.
On December 27, 1957 David Miller married Nancy Jo (Templeton) Miller. They have two children - D. Garth Miller and Dain C. Miller. Then on July 11, 1972 he married Joanne Kay (Ervin) Miller. They have a child - Erik J. Miller. He has 10 grandchildren and 15 nephews and nieces.
