In 1975 David received Bachelor of Arts at Southeastern Massachusetts University, and after that he earned Master of Fine Arts at the University of Arizona in 1982.
David Rivard devoloped his career mostly as a writer of poetry books. With his first verse collection, "Torque", David Rivard distinguished himself as a writer of volatile poems with striking imagery. Rivard followed "Torque" with "Wise Poison", another award-winning volume of visceral, unsettling verses that prompted some critics to hail him as a distinctive and compelling poet.
David's poems and essays have appeared in numerous literary magazines, including New England Review, Ploughshares, Poetry, and TriQuarterly. David Rivard is Poetry Editor at the Harvard Review, and teaches at the University of New Hampshire, and the Vermont College M.F.A. in Writing Program.
On December 17, 1982, David married Michaela Sullivan, with whom he has a daughter Simone Rivard.
