Jan Pechenik was born on May 5, 1950 in Jamaica, New York, United States.
Pechenik entered Duke University in 1968 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971. Also he studied at MIT Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution from 1971 to 1975, where he was given a Master of Science degree in Biology. In 1976, Jan entered the Graduate School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island and earned his Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography in 1978.
Pechenik began his career as a marine biologist at Environmental Research Laboratory at USEPA (the United States Environmental Protection Agency) in 1976. Two years later he became an assistant professor of Biology Department at Tufts University. In 1984, Jan took the position of an associate professor at the same university. Since 1994 Jan has been a professor of Biology Department at Tufts University. In 2010 he founded SciSpark.

1987Pechenik has been the president of Phi Beta Kappa since 2011. He is a member of the American Society of Zoologists, Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, American Institute of Biological Sciences and Sigma Xi.
On July 17, 1982 Jan Pechenik married Linda S. Eyster. They have a child.
