David Sterritt was born on September 11, 1944, in Bay Shore, New York, United States.
David Sterritt studied at Boston University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language and Literature in 1967. He also attended New York University and received there a Master of Arts in Cinema Studies in 1992 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1994.
David Sterritt started his career as a Chief Editor at Boston After Dark (now the Boston Phoenix). In 1968, he took up a post of a film critic and staff writer at The Christian Science Monitor and worked there until 2005. He worked as a Boston Theater Critic in Variety magazine from 1969 to 1973 and also was a Film Critic for All Things Considered, on National Public Radio from 1978 to 1980. In 1994, Sterritt took up a post of a Senior Critic at the National Critics Institute of the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center and held this post until 2002. He worked as a Programming Associate at the Makor/Steinhardt Center of the 92nd Street Y from 2005 to 2007.
David Sterritt worked as an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University School of the Arts from 1989 to 2015. In 1993 he started to work as a professor at Long Island University and held this post until 2005 when he became Professor Emeritus of Theater and Film there. Since 2010, Sterritt works as an Adjunct Professor, Maryland Institute College of Art. He is also Distinguished Visiting Faculty in the Goldring Arts Journalism Program at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.
David Sterritt published his first book The Films of Alfred Hitchcock in 1993. Later he published such books as Mad to be Saved: The Beat's, the '50s and Film, Jean-Luc Godard: Interviews, The Films of Jean-Luc Godard: Seeing the Invisible, Screening the Beats: Media Culture and the Beat Sensibility, The Cinema of Clint Eastwood: Chronicles of America and Rock 'n' Roll Movies.
His recent book Simply Chaplin was published in 2018. He is a contributor of articles on film, theater, music, and the arts to various publications, including New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Denver Post, American Film, Film Comment, Chronicle of Higher Education, Cineaste, Hitchcock Annual, Mosaic, and Cinema Scope. He also has appeared as a guest on CBS Morning News, Nightline, Charlie Rose, Geraldo at Large, Catherine Crier Live, CNN Live Today.

Now he is a member of the National Society of Film Critics, Society for Cinema Studies, International Federation of Film Critics, Online Film Critics Society and the University Seminar on Cinema and Interdisciplinary Interpretation.
David Sterritt married Virginia Grubb on September 14, 1968. The marriage produced two children.
