David Wykes began his career at the University of Nottingham as an assistant lecturer in 1967. In a year he became a lecturer at the University of Trondheim. From 1969 to 1972 David worked at Trinity College as a junior research fellow. In 1972 Wykes was appointed at Dartmouth College, first as an assistant professor, then as associate professor and professor. Currently, he is Professor Emeritus.
David wrote his first book A Preface to Dryden in 1977. His latest book Evelyn Waugh: A Literary Life was published in 1999.
