The purpose of this book is to try to explain the biological and clinical behaviour of tumours of the human thyroid follicular cell in terms of their underlying genetic and biochemical abnormalities. As a background, the mechanisms controlling normal thyroid cell division are discussed before considering the changes occurring in tumour cells. The development of the various stages of tumourigenesis is discussed in the light of modern concepts of neoplasia, emphasizing particularly the fundamental role of oncogenes. Older studies of experimental thyroid carcinogenesis are also included and re-evaluated to the more recent data. This book should be of interest to pathologists and endocrinologists wishing to know more of the basic biology of thyroid tumours. and also to non-clinical cancer biologists.
