LEWIS, David Francis was born on October 21, 1855 in Bultington, near Welshpool. Son of late Reverend D. P. Lewis, who died Rector of Llandrusio, Montgomeryshire, in 1892, and Louisa, youngest daughter of late Captain F. Hallowes, Royal Navy, of Glapwell Hall, Derbyshire.

Gazetted Sub-Lieut, unattached and proceeded to Sandhurst, 1875. Joined 2nd Bn. The Buffs, 1876. Lieutenant, 1875 (antedated).
District Adjutant, Natal, April to October 1878. Served in Zulu War with the Buffs. Action of Inyezane, siege of Etshowe, wounded (despatches), 1879.
