Ohashi was born on November 21, 1936 in New York City, New York, United States; the son of Allan Kyso Ohashi and Marjory (Ketcham) Ohashi.
Ohashi received his bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1959. He then received a Master of Science degree from Thomas Jefferson University in 1974. Nine years later, he earned his doctorate from the University of Hawaii.
Ohashi served in three combat support hospitals during the Vietnam War. He worked in the 106th General Hospital in Yokohama as well as the 24th Evacuation Hospital in Long Binh, and 3d Field Hospital, Saigon, in Vietnam. He retired from the Army in 1987 a Lieutenant Colonel in the Medical Service Corps United States Army. He was awarded a Bronze Star.
In 1974, he was appointed the chief of the microbiology department of pathology, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 16th Street, Washington DC, United States (this is a patient treating institution), where he worked until 1977 and again in 1983-1984. In 1978, David took the same position at Tripler Army Medical Center and had held it for a year. From 1990 he was an assistant professor at Campbell University. Nowadays Ohashi has been a professor emeritus of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology Department at Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
