David Atkinson began his career as an assistant professor of political science at the University of Missouri in 1967. Four years later he was appointed as an associate professor of political science. In 1986 he became a professor of political science and law. From 1979 to 1981, and from 1989 to 1991 Atkinson was Chairman of the department of political science, becoming a Curators' Distinguished Teaching Professor in 1999. In 2011 David became Professor Emeritus.
In 1999 he published his first book Leaving the Bench: Supreme Court Justices at the End.
David Atkinson is a contributor to books, including, The Ambivalent Force: Perspectives on the Police, and The Supreme Court Justices and Their Court in the Stream of History and a contributor to professional journals, including Journal of Public Law, Midwest Journal of Political Science, Supreme Court Historical Society Quarterly, Chitty’s Law Journal, and Creighton Law Review.
David Neal Atkinson is a member of the American Political Science Association, Supreme Court History Association and the editorial board of American Review of Politics.
