David Given was born on November 8, 1943 in Nelson, New Zealand. He is the son of Bruce and Brenda (Gower-Jones) Given.
Given attended Canterbury University in New Zealand and earned Bachelor of Science degree from it in 1965, and Doctor of Philosophy degree 5 years later. In addition, he graduated from Moore University in 1975, he studied theology there.
Given started his career serving as a scientist at the Department of Science and Industrial Research in New Zealand, from 1965 to 1992.
He was a research fellow of National Research Council Canada during 2 years from 1973.
Given worked as a principal in the company David Given & Associates in Christchurch from 1992. He had been holding the post of lecturer of Lincoln University since 1996.
He continued his career working as a manager and associate professor of Isaac Center for Nature Conservation at the Lincoln University from 1999.
Also he has been serving at the post of consultant to Council Sarawak Biodiversity Center in Malaysia, since 1998.
Since 2003 he has been working as a Botanical services curator in Christchurch Cuty Council.
In addition, he is a contributor of more than one hundred-fifty articles and numerous photographs to scientific journals and periodicals.
